A free, open-source, and cross-platform 3DS emulator that aims to pick up where Citra left off #Nintendo 3DS Emulator #Gaming Emulator #Console Emulator #Nintendo #3DS #Emulator
The world of gaming emulators has without doubt been shaken to its core after the whole closing down of Yuzu and Citra following legal action from Nintendo.
For some, this is a "doh, what-did-you-expect" moment since, sadly, piracy was somewhat facilitated by gaming emulators of this type. For others, this action was a "this-is-why-we-can't-have-anything-nice" moment.
Regardless of which side you stand with, I think it's quite a shame that both Yuzu and Citra have been shut down, especially because they were very good software.
We are clearly in a new era for gaming emulation software, and even though Citra and Yuzu are no longer around, there is one project that aims to "revive" the Citra project, and it's called Lime3DS.
The "revive" part might actually be true since there is currently a big gap in the "market" for a good 3DS emulator that's also free, open-source, and cross-platform.
Lime3DS is a fork of Citra written in C++. This means that it has a lot of its DNA, including the portability, compatibility options and features that made Citra the best (and most popular open-source) Nintendo 3DS emulator.
Currently, Lime3DS boasts firmware emulation, Amiibo loading, as well as partial support for Homebrew applications.
At this point in time, it's really difficult to predict what the future of gaming emulation and Lime3DS in particular will be. However, considering Lime3DS is a fork of Citra, I would dare to say that it shows promise.
Let's just hope that the development team behind the app plays its cards right. For more information on the project, as well as instructions on how you can contribute to the project, simply check out the app's GitHub repository page.
What's new in Lime3DS 2111:
- Linux: Downgraded minimum glibc version from 2.38 to 2.36
- This fixes a regression introduced in 2110 where certain Linux distros, such as the Steam Deck's SteamOS, were unable to launch Lime3DS via AppImage due to the glibc version being too recent
- Android: Updated internal resolution selection interface to more closely match the desktop equivalent
- The setting is now configured using a dropdown menu instead of a slider
