Scientific Linux, a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux put together by various labs and universities around the world, has just reached version 5.7.

Scientific Linux 5.7 comes with some new apps and a few improvements. Most importantly, the distribution is now powered by Linux kernel 2.6.18. Not much of an improvement, but at least is something new.

Other notable changes are: openAFS client 1.4.14, Xorg 7.1, ALSA 1.0.17, GNOME 2.16.0 as the standard desktop environment, The GIMP 2.2.13, OpenOffice.org 3.3.1.

Mozilla Firefox 3.6.23, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.24, KDE 3.5.4 (but only for the LiveDVD), Evolution 2.12.3 are also included in Scientific Linux 5.7 Live CD.

There are also some new packages compared to the standard Scientific Linux 5.7, such as fuse-ntfs-3g, ntfsprogs, Gparted, reiserfs-utils, progsreiserfs, ms-sys, dd_rescue, ddrescue, iperf, and xdialog.
