Usually, snapshots are used for data protection again a wide range of activities which include human error, or data mining, or potential tampering from outside sources. However, snapshots can prove to be remarkably useful when it comes to testing applications.

While there are a lot of useful apps that allow you to backup your system, and restore it at a later point, finding one that can do the same for apps is a bit more tricky.

For instance, what if you want to create snapshots for your Flatpak or Flathub apps? If that's the case, then you should check out jdFlatpakSnapshot, a free and open-source app that allows you to create snapshots of a Flatpak/Flathub app's data. This provides a safety need should you ever need to roll back to it when and if the unexpected comes.

The way the app works is quite straightforward. Just select any of the installed apps from the list (on the left side of the GUI), select a compression method, and hit Save.

The compression methods include GZIP, BZIP2, and LZMA. Once this is done, the newly created snapshot will be displayed on the right side of the GUI, from where you can always restore, rename, delete, and even export it.

There's also a small Settings menu that allows you to change the Flatpak command, choose the date/time format, as well as choose between multiple languages for the GUI (but it does require you to restart the app).

jdFlatpakSnapshot is by no means the most comprehensive app for creating snapshots out there, however, the fact that it's specifically designed to provide this action for Flatpak/Flathub apps is quite the acomplishment, since getting into the nitty gritty of Flathub app installers can prove to be difficult for the average user.
