Wildcard For Linux

Regular expressions, also known as rational expressions (or Regex and Regexp for short) are defined as sequences of characters that specify a match pattern within a text.

Regular expressions are mostly used in theoretical computer science and formal language theory, but they're also used by string-searching algorithms for the popular FIND or FIND AND REPLACE operations (useful for input validation).

Since regular expressions are useful when it comes to accurately finding and extracting information from large amounts of text, and can be used across a wide range of programming languages, and can also help developers save a lot of time, learning how to use them can be quite important.

That's exactly why Wildcard was created. Wildcard is a free, open-source, Linux-only app that allows you to test regular expressions. It can also be just as easily used to practice regular expressions.

At its core, Wildcard is a very straightforward app. It boasts a gorgeously simple and modern GTK GUI that allows you to enter and test strings of text.

You're also provided with two extra menus (dialogs), one that allows you to edit the regular expression you want to test, and one for choosing between multiple expressions flags (or, more accurately, for switching expression flags on or off).

These expressions flags dialog includes parameters such as Multiline, Case Sensitive, Ignore Whitespaces, Dot Matches Newline, Unicode, and Swap Greed.

Clearly, Wildcard is not designed to impress you with its features. It's designed mainly for simplicity and can be a good little companion app for those who want to learn/test regular expressions directly from the comforts of the GNOME desktop (even though it can also be installed on other Linux distros with various other desktop environments).
