Tootle For Linux

First launched in 2016, Mastodon is one of the "youngest" social networks out there. Mastodon is a micro blogging service created by a young German coder Eugen Rochko.

For those who don't know much about the platform, it may seem that Mastodon is very similar to Twitter. In some respects, it sure is, as it allows users to post messages up to 500 characters in length (called "toots"), and, of course, messages can be re-posted.

The most important difference, when compared to Twitter, is that Mastodon is open-source and fully decentralized. Users can run self-hosted social network services (servers) with bespoke codes of conduct and custom rules.

If you're running Linux, and you want to access Mastodon more easily, then you may want to check out Tootle.

Tootle is a clean-looking, user-friendly, GTK client for Mastodon.

It provides pretty much the same level of functionality as the official web app, but makes the experience a lot more seamless with your desktop environment.

The main advantage of Tootle is how smooth it makes the experience with Mastodon.

Notifications can be accessed from your system's event bar, and you can also set up and toggle between multiple Mastodon accounts directly from its GUI.

It doesn't provide a lot in terms of timeline filtering, but at least the content is somewhat organized in four main sections: Home, Notifications, Local, and Federated.

As expected, you can see followers or following accounts, as well as manage the "relationship" between accounts (follow requests, blocks, and so forth).

Tootle is by no means the most advanced Mastodon client out there. However, for Linux, it's definitely one of the best since it perfectly integrates with GNOME, and it's also lightning fast.
