Playhouse For Linux

Getting started as a web developer is definitely not the easiest of tasks, but considering the sheer amount of online resources, it's definitely easier than it ever was.

Complex IDEs can also be somewhat of a hurdle for a young developer, but that's easily fixable with the help of Playhouse.

According the its developer (and other people who worked/work on the project) it's a free and open-source app that makes "it easy to prototype, teach, design, learn, and build Web things."

In short, a "playground" for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

The most important aspect of Playhouse comes in the form of its three specialized editors. They're not the most complex editors out there, but they do offer a series of basic features including autocomplete, auto save, and syntax highlighting.

Another great aspect is the Web Preview panel which can be turned off or on as you please. The app's GUI definitely deserves a bit of praise since it looks and feels very modern. You can even pop open all three editors and the preview section simultaneously.

Other than that, you get light and dark theme support, a series of neat (but basic) developer tools, and standard keyboard shortcut support.

Having said all that, it's pretty clear that Playhouse is and isn't. If you're just starting out with any of the three (JavaScript, CSS, and HTML), then it might be a good option to use until you learn the ropes. Playhouse can also be a pretty decent learning tool thanks to its non-intimidating feature set and nice GUI.

However, if you're really serious about learning, there's a good chance you'll eventually opt for a more advanced and highly specialized IDE.
