Record screen activity on Linux with the help of this stylish and efficient screen recorder app for GNOME that also works on Wayland. #Screen Recorder #Record Screen #Screencast App #Screen #Recorder #App
There are many good screen recording utilities for Linux. Even though most of them use the same underpinnings, and look pretty similar, they're usually decent for simple screen recording tasks.
However, things get a bit tricky when and if you want a screen recording software that doesn't lack features and supports Wayland, because there aren't many.
Kooha is one of the few screen recording apps out there that work on Wayland (and Xorg display servers as well). It's also quite stylish, decently lightweight, and offers a surprising amount of features.
The app is free and open-source and it was built using GTK and PyGObject. Fun fact, it uses the same under-the-hood components as GNOME's built-in screen recorder (which also supports Wayland).
Apart from a "pretty" face, here's what you get. Kooha provides you with two screen recording modes: Entire Screen and Selected Area. You're provided with the ability to record audio from either the microphone, or the system along with video, as well as add the mouse pointer to the recording.
Of course, the app also features a delay option (either 5 or 10 seconds of delay), support for keyboard shortcuts, and provides you with control over the saving location.
In terms of video formats, you can choose between four: WebM, MKV, MP4, and GIF.
Even though there are other installation options found on the Releases page of the project's GitHub repository page, the easiest way to install Kooha on your Linux system is via Flathub.
Depending on your system and its desktop environment, the may or may not work as intended. One of the most annoying bugs we've discovered is related to how the app records the audio from the microphone (hit and miss). Another drawback is that Kooha doesn't seem to have multi-monitor support.
If you're having problems with Kooha, check out the following sections: the screen cast compatibility page of xdg-desktop-portal-wlr wiki, and the official troubleshooting checklist.
Even though Kooha is by no means a perfect product, it's definitely worth your attention if you're looking for a stylish, modern, and efficient screen recording app for Wayland.
