Keystroke For Linux

Keystroke is an open source and cross-platform graphical software written in Qt for the KDE desktop environment and designed to be used as a logging and/or monitoring utility for keystrokes.

It is a key logging and keystroke visualizer application that appears to be very useful when running screencasts under Linux operating systems that use the beautiful and powerful KDE desktop environment, displaying what you are typing.

However, you can use the application on any other open-source desktop environment, including GNOME, Cinnamon, LXDE, Xfce, MATE or LXQt. The developer provides an YouTube demo of the application at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsQeZZ8HPIM and it notes that it’s very handy when using Vim.

To use the Keystroke application on your GNU/Linux distribution, you must first install it. The application is not available in the software repositories of major operating systems, so you’ll have to download the source tarball from Softpedia or via the project’s official website (see link at the end of the article).

Save the archive somewhere on your computer, extract its contents using an archive manager utility, open a terminal emulator software and navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/keystroke-0.0.2).

Run the ‘cmake .’ command to configure the program, followed by the ‘make’ command to compile it. After a successful compilation, run the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as privileged user to install Keystroke system wide.

Fire up the application from the main menu of your desktop environment, like you would launch any other program. It’s interface is quite simple and intuitive, so you won’t have any problem using it.
