Compressing images can go a long way towards saving precious space on both your local drives as well as your external storage units, especially if you're dealing with massive numbers.

As its name clearly states, Image Optimizer is an application that can help you with this issue. It's a simple lossless image compression software built for elementary OS, but thankfully, it works on pretty much all other Linux distributions.

The app is built with Vala and GTK, and it helps you compress massive numbers of images with just a few clicks using JpegOptim and OptiPNG.

Both JpegOptim and OptiPNG are free and open-source, command line-based image compression tools.

Image Optimizer provides a quick and easy way to make use of everything these two tools offer, without having to deal with commands. And, because it works fully offline, it makes the whole process a lot faster and a lot easier than using similar online tools.

The whole premise of Image Optimizer is to be as easy to use as possible. The GUI is simple and clean-looking, and it features support for drag and drop, making the whole process as smooth as possible.

You can compress a wide range of image formats out there like BPM, JPG, JPEG, PNG, PNM, and TIFF, without losing a lot in terms of image quality.

Image Optimizer is a very straightforward and remarkably efficient photo compressor app. It doesn't have hidden menus, configuration options, and other features one might expect to find in an app of this sort. You just fire up the app, drag and drop as many pictures or images on its GUI as you want, and that's it.

What's new in Image Optimizer 0.1.22:

  • Fixes:
  • Fixed flatpak issue where dragging an image gives a 0 byte sized image and would therefore not be optimized. Also fixed issue where optimizing an image from the home directory would not work. #62 thanks to @cassidyjames
