ISO Image Writer For Linux

What's really awesome about KDE apps in general is that they're really nicely built, even though they may not be the most stunning-to-look-at software out there.

Another nice aspect is that KDE apps are usually designed to run on pretty much any Linux desktop environment, and some of them can even run on other platforms such as Windows or macOS.

ISO Image Write is no exception. It's a small and seemingly stripped down KDE application that allows you to quickly and effortlessly create bootable USB drives. More to the point, it allows you to write ISO images to any USB disk.

Since it's such as simple app, it's no wonder that working with ISO Image Writer is also straightforward.

You simply open the app, select the ISO image your want to write, and simply select the USB drive you want the ISO to be written on, and that's basically it. From this point onward, you can either wipe the USB disk clean (aka format it), or start writing on it directly (if you know that this operation has been done previously).

On closer inspection, you might also see a message along the lines of "Verified as valid [...]." In short, the app also verifies the ISOs from a wide range of distros to ensure that the ISO are valid. This is possible thanks to udisks2.

udisks is a demon that implements D-Bus interfaces used to query and manipulate storage devices (and it also has a bespoke command-line tool called udisksctl). This also means that ISO Image Writer does not run as root.

ISO Image Writer is one of the latest apps to join the KDE ecosystem, and it's great to see KDE picking up steam in this regard. While not particularly impressive, ISO Image Writer is a good, dependable and fast little application that works exactly as it should.
