In today's world, APIs are very important as they're essential for how data is shared and processed. In short, APIs are one of the most vital parts of any quality software (especially when it comes to web and mobile apps).
Hence, having the right tools for API testing in order to see if the API adheres to any given requirements is also paramount.
HTTPie is one such tool, an open-source CLI tool that provides efficient API testing directly from the Terminal. It's used for testing, debugging, and interacting with API (users can create complex requests, automate testing flow, etc.).
Long story short, HTTPie has become one of the top projects on GitHub, which is no small feat. The only "downside" of the project? - the app's lack of a proper GUI. An issue solved by HTTPie Desktop.
The first thing that stands out is the lengths that the developers of the app (and the team of designers that helped create the UI - Evil Martian) went to in order to make the app look and feel as "macOS-esq" as possible. While this design choice isn't for everyone, I have to say that the user experience is top-notch.
In order to make the app feel as modern and as user-focused as possible, the team added elements such as tabs, workspaces, collections, a sleek code preview section, and cloud synchronization.
In order to achieve the native interface look and support for all major platforms out there, the team opted to use Electron (and Tailwind for styling, as well as some React components).
Last but not least, it's worth noting that HTTPie Desktop has an AI assistant. It's there to help users generate requests for prompts. The best part is that you can basic human language and there's a fairly good chance the AI will guess what you want or need (provided you don't overwhelm it complex wording).
All in all HTTPie Desktop is a really great API testing tool. It allows you to interact with APIs quite effortlessly, organize your work using tabs, collections, and workspaces, and even leverage the power of AI-assisted work (which could be useful if you're a beginner).
There's a lot to unpack about HTTPie Desktop (and its CLI version), so I recommend you start off by checking out the app's Docs section. Oh, and if you don't want to install the Flathub version of the app, and you want the latest possible version by opting for the AppImage package from GitHub, then please note that you'll need AppImageLauncher to make it work.
What's new in HTTPie Desktop 2024.1.2:
- Fixed a bug introduced in 2024.1.1 that led to Control-W on Linux and Windows unintentionally closing the app window instead of just the current tab.
