Enjoy fast and reliable translations from the comfort of your Linux desktop with the help of Glate, a nice Google Translate client. #Google Translate #Text To Speech #Desktop Translator #Google #Translate #Translation
We all know about Google Translate, the world's most popular translation service that boasts good translation accuracy, support for well over 100 languages, and somewhere around 500 million users (according to the service's blog).
While popping open a browser tab and accessing Google Translate is not difficult, there's a more convenient way to take advantage from everything this amazing service has to offer, and it's called Glate.
Glate is a free, open-source, and straightforward Linux application that brings all the Google Translate text translation features, including text to speech, directly to your computer's desktop.
In short, it's an app that allows you to translate text via Google Translate directly from the desktop, meaning, you don't get the full spectrum of features that Google Translate's web app offers (features such as translations of entire websites, images, and uploaded documents).
The way Glate works is fairly similar to that of the official Google Translate web app. You select the preferred language (or use the auto-detect feature), you enter the text, you select the target language, and you click the "Translate" button (which in Glate's case is the arrow-shaped button from the middle of the GUI).
As expected, Glate features the full spectrum of supported languages, meaning you can translate with ease between next to 104 languages. The app also has a few interesting features of its own that includes line-by-line translation, the ability to download the text-to-speech session in MP3 format, and history of text translations (which can also be exported in TXT format).
There's also a translation share option (with a built-in pastebin generator), two GUI modes (Light and Dark), and a specific hotkey (which can be changed from the Settings menu) that allows you to translate text from any website (or even other apps).
Glate is a simple, but very well-designed application that brings the best of what Google Translate has to offer a bit closer to you and your daily workflow. It may not be to everyone's taste, but because the app also brings a few features of its own, it somewhat elevates the experience over that offered by Google Translate.
What's even better is the fact that according to the developer of the app, we can expect some new and exciting features in the future.
