GNOME Usage is an open-source and free graphical application designed to offer you an easy-to-use and straightforward utility for viewing information about the use of system resources on your GNU/Linux computer, including memory, processor, and disk space.
Simple user interface, easy to use, no buttons
GNOME Usage features a very simple user interface with no buttons, where the user doesn’t have to do too much. When you open the app, you’ll immediately see all the information about the use of system resources at a glance. The UI is split in two parts, Performance and Storage.
Performance is the first tab, where you can see details about processor (CPU) and memory (RAM + SWAP). You can switch between processor and memory views from the left sidebar, and view which apps consume the more in the main view, from where you can terminate apps that eat too much RAM or CPU.
On the other hand, the Storage tab is quite straightforward as it only shows you occupied and free space, along with total capacity and the size of each folder in your Home directory. From the Storage view, users will be able to empty folders they think occupy space and refresh the view to get the current storage information.
Works with any GNU/Linux distribution and desktop environment
Distributed as part of the GNOME desktop environment, GNOME Usage is a new app that has been integrated during the development cycle of the GNOME 3.28 series, but it can also be used as a standalone application on any other Open Source desktop environment, such as KDE Plasma, Xfce, LXDE, MATE, or Cinnamon, and works with virtually any GNU/Linux distribution.
Bottom line
We find GNOME Usage a great replacement for the old GNOME System Monitor app. It’s a modern app for modern GNU/Linux users that even if it looks simpler, it can do everything you want from a system monitoring utility, such as to quickly view which programs eat the most CPU and/or RAM, as well as to terminate them to stabilize the OS.
