Enjoy this nifty screensaver that simulates a flip clock, meaning it displays the time on digit cards and flips them when the time changes #Clock Screensaver #Linux Screensaver #Display Time #Time #Clock #Screensaver
It seems that flip clocks are making somewhat of a comeback in the last couple of years. Even though flip clocks work pretty much in the same way as digital clocks (there's a big difference in how they display time), the latter are arguably a lot more stylish with their large, sharply contrasted number displays.
Flip clocks might be somewhat difficult to find these days, and if you manage to get your hands on one it might set you back a relatively hefty amount of money.
If you love flip clocks, and you want to add a bit of style to your workplace or home, then you could consider installing FlipClock, a flip clock simulator in the form of a screensaver.
FlipClock is a screensaver that works on both Linux and Windows. It uses SDL2 (not SDL1), and it uses plain C (and not Flash) to display the time in a stylish, "flip-clocky" manner.
In short, to run FlipClock on your Linux computer, you don't need to install any additional software, as it relies on SDL2, SDL2_ttf, and the basic C standard library.
One extra aspect you should be aware of is the fact that FlipClock comes with multi-display support. However, please note that adding or removing monitors while the app is running is not supported. What this means is that you first have to add the extra monitors, and then restart the app in order for FlipClock to work as intended.
The screensaver really stays true to its name, as it perfectly emulates the classic flip clock look and feel (too bad it doesn't make the classic flip clock sounds as well).
On Linux, the app can be installed from its official Flathub page, or you could very well build it from source by taking a look at its GitHub repository page.
The app supports configuration files and CLI arguments (see Configuration section on GitHub), however, we suspect that most users won't actually bother with that.
For some, flip clocks usually bring a bit of oldschool style to one's home, while others prefer them primarily for the nostalgia. Regardless of your reasons, FlipClock is a nice, little replacement for a real flip clock, a stylish screensaver app for both Linux and Windows that works as intended right out of the box.
