A modern, free, open-source, and cross-platform emoji picker app based on Emoji Mart #Emoji Picker #Emoji Selector #Emoji App #Emoji #Picker #Select
As its name clearly states, Emoji Mart is one of many modern emoji pickers out there.
Emoji Mart sports the same as the web component its based on, and is built using two relatively new web app building frameworks (Tauri and Svelte).
It's a free, open-source, and cross-platform application that works on all three major OSes out there such as Windows, macOS, and Linux (with plenty of binaries for various Linux distros).
Emoji Mart looks and functions pretty much like most other emoji pickers out there. It has a pop-up GUI (which can be easily activated via custom system shortcuts) that disappears once an emoji is selected. This is a good time to point out that it also has an auto-paste function (meaning the selected emoji is automatically copied to your computer's clipboard).
Emojis can be selected both via mouse and keyboard, the app remembers your favorite emojis and the search text box is automatically focused once its invoked. The app also aims to use your system's theme automatically. In short, it's a super simple and very easy-to-use application that doesn't get in your way (it does not stay as a standalone window and it does not run in the background).
Emoji Mart is a very young project and aside from potential bugs, you should know that it doesn't have multi-selection (meaning you can't paste more than one emoji at a time).
Another thing you should be aware of is that Emoji Mart is mainly designed to work on X11. For instance, the auto-paste function can be enabled on Wayland, but it does require you to open permissions of /dev/uinput (which is not entirely recommended due to security reasons).
According to the app's GitHub page, "if you are using Wayland on GNOME, we recommend to enable new windows to be centered." If this option is not enabled, then the app will appear on the top left corner, which can be a bit awkward. Because it's heavily based around web technologies, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's not the most as fast as a native app.
Emoji Mart is very much at the start of its life as a project, hence, one could expect various improvements with time. The good news is that it's build with modern and flexible technologies, which should make updating and maintaining the app not at all difficult.
