Commit messages are one of the best communication channels usually used by the members within a development team. A good and effective commit message can save the whole team a lot of time searching and looking for those pesky changes related to a bug or problem.

As its name clearly states, Commit is an app that's all about commit messages. In short, it's a writer/editor application designed to help you write the best possible Git and Mercurial commit messages.

There are a couple of aspects that make Commit such an efficient little app. For starters, it caters to new or beginner users by automatically popping up when you or your team makes a commit in one of your projects.

Secondly, there's the instructions it provides. After installing the app, you're greeted by the app's Settings section. Alongside various options and features, this section also provides quick access to various instructions that make it a lot easier to get to grips with the app.

Even though it might seem a simple app, Commit offers a plethora of nice-to-have features. For example, it highlights the overflow of the commit title, displays the folder and branch in the window header, auto capitalizes the commit title, and offers highlight syntax for Git, Mercurial, and others.

There's also smart body wrapping, dark mode support, keyboard navigation and shortcuts, undo and redo support, an emoji picker, and the option to insert a blank line between title and body.

As mentioned before, it supports for Mercurial and Git commits. These include commit, merge, tag --annotate, add --patch, rebase --interactive.

Commit is a nice little tool that should come in handy to most developers who want a bit more control over their projects' commits. It's not what one might call groundbreaking, that's true, but considering that it has the potential to save you a bit of time, should make it a valuable tool to have.
