A good clipboard manager can do wonders for your productivity, especially if your work involves a lot of copying and pasting. When it comes to clipboard managers, the more features they have and the easier they are to use and access, the better they usually are.
Clipboard to File is not exactly a clipboard manager, as it's more of a situational tool that revolves around your computer's clipboard. That said, let us ask you this: ever wanted to have the option to copy a block of text from your clipboard directly into a file?
If the answer is yes, then Clipboard to File will definitely help you out immensely.
As its name suggests Clipboard to File is an app that allows you to copy text from your clipboard directly into a file. This is particularly handy for users who want to manually build databases, or users who are researching a particular thing and want a quick way to copy data to separate files.
Clipboard to File is the brainchild of Marcos Alvarez Costales, a enthusiastic developer that also developed another nice little app called Folder Color.
Just like Folder Color, Clipboard to File works around Ubuntu's Nautilus file manager. Once the tool is installed, you should see a new entry with the app's name in the right-click context menu. This is the perfect time to point out that it also supports Nemo and Caja, two other file managers.
When you want to save a piece of text within a file, it usually involves you having to launch your system's text editor (or any other third party text editor), paste the clipboard content in, and then save the file in question by choosing a name and the destination location.
This is a simple process, but there's no denying that it takes a bit of time. This becomes even more apparent when you have repeat the process a couple of times. Clipboard to File has the potential to help you save a lot of time since it instantly saves clipboard text as a new text file.
What's more, it does the same thing with images. For example, you copy an image to your clipboard, the app automatically saves the content as PNG, JPEG, or whatever the original format may be.
Last but not least, we have to point out that the app only works on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS. We've tried to make the app work on Ubuntu 22.10, for instance, and failed (probably has to do with the fact that Nautilus transitioned to GTK4/libadwaita in 22.10).
If you want to give this app a try, you're forced to install it using the dedicated PPA. Thankfully, it's a simple process and the installation instructions can be found on both the app's GitHub repository page, and the official website.
