A free and open-source, Linux-only Markdown editor that packs an impressive array of features. #Markdown Editor #Markdown Preview #Text Editor #Text #Markdown #Editor
Thanks to my job and being somewhat passionate about writing myself, I've had the opportunity to test a lot of Markdown editors over the years.
I'm usually a big fan of super-minimalistic ones (mostly because I don't really need all the latest and greatest features), but I have to admit, I can't say no to Markdown editors that are well made and have tons of nice features.
One example of such an app is ThiefMD, a free, open-source, and feature-packed Markdown editor for Linux. It's heavily inspired by Ulysses, and the initial code is based on Quilter.
Let's cover the features first. It has auto-save, live previews, typewriter scrolling, full screen editing, a focus mode, writing statistics, and a lot of export and import options.
One thing I like about ThiefMD is that it allows you to import filest from almost anywhere. You can import ePUBs, as well as DOCX, ODT, HTML, and lots of other formats.
As far as its export capabilities go, you get PDF, ePUB, DOCX, and it also has the ability to directly publish your work on platforms such as WordPress, Medium, Forem, WriteFreely, and Ghost.
At first glance, it has all the basics covered: a good and simple GUI (that's also quite customizable via themes), good import and export format support, as well as tons of useful features such as live preview, a focus mode, syntax highlighting, and even typewriter scrolling (that keeps your active live fixed, both in the editor and in the preview).
ThiefMD has a lot of extra features as well, more advanced ones to be more precise. This includes KaTeX Support, as well as a YAML Frontmatter (useful when using Jekyll, Hugo, and pretty much any statis site generator).
ThiefMD also boasts Fountain support, as well as BibTex support.
ThiefMD is a very well-rounded Markdown editor. It can be used as a simple, very efficient Markdown editor, but it can do a lot more heavy lifting when things get more complex. Is it perfect? Well, for me, it is. However, not everyone has the same requirements as me when it comes to Markdown editors.
What's also really impressive is the fact that the developer behind the project has various various future improvements in mind such as better library organization, enhanced export tooling, better import support for screenplays, as well as the addition of project notes.
For more information about the project, you can check out the app's official website, or the GitHub repository.
What's new in ThiefMD 0.2.7:
- There's a lot of changes under the hood. We now use the Wordpress REST API instead of XML-RPC. libsoup3 and Webkit2GTK 4.1 power network connections and previews. We're now build on the GNOME 44 SDK.
- Changes:
- Like your files to fly solo? Open files from your file manager. Even abandon our library concept if you want to.
