Xubuntu For Linux

Welcome to the Gutsy Gibbon edition of Xubuntu, an open source distribution of Linux derived from the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu and built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

Xubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was officially announced by Canonical on October 18, 2007 along with other Ubuntu flavors. It was supported with security patched and software updates until April 18th, 2009, and can be downloaded as Desktop CDs and Alternate CDs for the 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms.

The boot loader has been extended with a new option, OEM install for manufacturers who want to deploy Xubuntu on their desktop or laptop computers. Other than that, the same standard options are provided on both the Desktop and Alternate CDs.

This Xubuntu release comes with the same traditional desktop environment that was used in previous Xubuntu releases, powered by the Xfce project and using a two-panel layout. While on top panel we can find the main menu, favorite apps and system tray area, the bottom panel includes the desktop switcher, a show desktop button and the window list.

Default applications include the GQview image viewer, GIMP image editor, Totem movie player (replaces gxine), Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, and Synaptic Package Manager for installing additional applications.

The Gutsy Gibbon release of Xubuntu also includes a nice collection of board and puzzle games, among which we can mention Aisleriot Solitaire, Blackjack, Chess, Five or More, Four-in-a-Row, FreeCell Solitaire, Gnometris, Iagno, Klotski, Mahjongg, Mines, Nibbles, Robots, and Sudoku.

Xubuntu 7.10 was a great release of this Ubuntu derived operating system suitable for old machines and low-end systems. It has been deprecated a long time ago and should only be used for historical purposes.
