Xfld For Linux

Xfld (Xfce Live Demo) is an open source project that has been designed from the ground up to be used as a demonstration CD for the lightweight Xfce graphical desktop environment. It is based off of Ubuntu, one of the most influential Linux kernel-based operating system of the 21st century.

The Xfld operating system can be downloaded from Softpedia as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image. This means that you can use the distribution on any computer that supports either the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

From the Live CD boot menu, which will appear when you boot the ISO image from the BIOS of a computer using either a CD disc or a USB flash drive, you can start the live system with default drivers or in safe graphics mode, perform a memory diagnostic test, check the integrity of the bootable medium (only is using a CD disc) or boot an existing OS from the local drive.

Being designed from the ground up to be uses as a demo for one of the most lightweight desktop environments ever built, the distribution will boot straight into Xfce, which uses a unique layout comprised of two panels, where the top panel is hidden by default.

Despite the fact that it has been designed as a Xfce demo CD, only a few Xfce-specific applications are included. Among these, we can mention the Xfburn CD/DVD burning utility, Xfmedia media player, GQview image viewer, Thunar file manager and Xfce Terminal terminal emulator.

In addition to the above, the OS features the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Gaim IM client, Wireshark network scanner, OpenOffice.org office suite, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Xine movie player, GIMP image editor and Synaptic Package Manager.
