Keeping track of your spending and income can prove to be a bit tricky. While prior generations relied on the classic pen and paper to keep track of their spending, we're a lot more fortunate in today's world with tons of nice web, desktop, and mobile apps to choose from.
Of course, budgeting tools can only help you so far, and, at the end of the day, good practice and discipline matter more than probably everything else. Still, that's not to say that a good finance app can't be extremely valuable.
Meet Buckets, a nifty, Electron-based application that's all about making "your budget quick, simple, and private." Before anything else, it's worth noting that Buckets uses a variation of the "Envelope Budgeting" method.
There are four main steps towards achieving your dream budget state. These are "Get a bucket," "Make it rain!," "Use it up," and "Adjust." In principle, just imagine you have buckets filled with money, and it will eventually make sense.
The first step requires you to write down all the things you want to buy, then all the things you want to save money for. Next, at the beginning of each month, fill up your buckets with what you expect to spend on the current month. Follow up by taking out money from the corresponding bucket throughout the month as you spend money.
Lastly, at the end of the month, move the money between buckets so that none of the buckets have a negative balance. The process can be repeated infinitely, and, of course, you can create new buckets if that's the case.
The app boasts a fairly simple, and well-designed GUI with a side panel, decent fonts, and some nice icons to help make things easier for you. The side panel is the place where you can access all the app's main sections, namely Accounts, Transactions, Buckets, Analysis, Import, Tools, Calculator, Search, and Settings.
Apart from the multilingual support, Buckets include a series of nice-to-have little features. These include various options to sync with your bank, record private macros, as well as import files or sign up with SimpleFIN Bridge.
The beauty of Buckets is that it's quite straightforward to use, even though it may not seem like that at first. This is the perfect time to point out that the app has one of the best Getting Started sections (including various YouTube tutorials) of any budgeting app, which is exactly why you should definitely check it out after installing the app.
Buckets is a well-designed budgeting application that will for sure come in handy if you're looking for a simple yet well-equipped app to help you out with your monthly expense and income. The app has a lot of cool little features such as the autosave feature, a useful calculator, notes support, and the ability to work with more than one window at a time.
