The main purpose of most apps is to make our lives as users a bit easier with specific tasks. However, not all apps have to be particularly useful all the time, well, at least not in a traditional sense.

Sometimes apps can be installed just for fun, and that's exactly what Qwertone achieves.

Qwertone is a simple, free, and open-source Linux application that turns your PC into a musical instrument. More to the point, it's a straightforward music synthesizer that relies on keyboard inputs.

Clearly, it's not the most advanced or the most professional tool of this sort out there, but that's fine. In fact, thinking of Qwertone as a simple toy piano app would probably be best.

Qwertone should work well on most Linux distributions thanks to its Flatpak package/installer on Flathub. Arch Linux users can also install it from the AUR PPA.

Alternatively, you can build it for your platform of choice as it only requires you to install Rust, GTK, and run a few build-related commands ("cargo build --release," and "cargo run --release").

In terms of features, as expected, there's not much to be discovered. The app has a small menu that provides you with a bit of control over your music-creating experience.

You can enable or disable the fade-in effect, as well as fine-tune its duration, add a metronome, as well as change the BPM and meter parameters.

As mentioned before, Qwertone won't blow off your socks with its amazing GUI or insane feature set. Qwertone is a simple little app that allows you to have a bit of fun from time to time when you want to take a break from work, or simply want to create a bit of simple music.

What's new in Qwertone 0.4.0:

  • Updated key mappings to cover 2nd and 3rd octave
