Animal Crossing (the first version launched in 2001) was not exactly what one might call a striking success, but a couple of spinoffs later and after a few ups and downs came Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a huge success and it delivered just what people needed in a very difficult period in most of our lives, the Coronavirus lockdown.
Animal Crossing is a game about a lot of things we took for granted before the lockdown, but came to appreciate them even more after 2020: family, human connection, friendship, and community.
There are numerous reasons why Animal Crossing was/is such as success, but one overlook aspect of the game's success is related to its simple and heart soothing soundtrack.
Nook Desktop is a free and open-source application built to bring hourly animal crossing music from Gamecube, DS/Wii, Switch, and mobile, from all seasons directly into your life.
In short, it's an app that plays Animal Crossing hourly themes on the hour.
Before Nook Desktop, Nook used to be a browser extension. However, due to changes in the Chrome Manifest v3, the browser extension became almost impossible to maintain. Hence, Nook became Nook Desktop with a series of new features, an improved GUI, and cross-platform support (works on Linux, macOS, and Windows).
For starters, let's talk about Nook Desktops main features. These include town tune customization, a K.K. slider music adjustment, an offline mode, and multilingual support (English, Spanish, French, German, and Chinese).
The app also boasts population growing snowy and cherry blossom themes, New Horizons rainy and snowy themes, Pocket camp themes, Town tunes, a grandfather clock mode, some very nifty rain sounds (both in-game, and no-thunder), as well as a Random mode.
Nook Desktop is not what one might call an impressive application. Nevertheless, thanks to its hefty feature set and AC theme collection, it can act as a very good ambient sound app which can boost productivity, especially if you happen to love the music from Animal Crossing.
