Ever wanted to record sounds or audio on Ubuntu? If the answer is yes, then you already probably know that there's no straightforward way of doing this.
The answer comes in the form of a nice little app generically called Audio Recorder. Here's what you need to know about it.
Audio Recorder is actually a revamped version of the GNOME applet called "Audio Rec." It can record audio from almost every source such as your system's sound card, microphone, browsers, webcams, and more.
In short, if the audio source plays either out of your loudspeakers or in your headphones, then Audio Recorder can capture and save it.
Audio Recorder can be installed on Ubuntu with ease via the Terminal from PPA. To install, follow the following commands: "sudo apt-add-repository ppa:audio-recorder/ppa," "sudo apt-get update," and "sudo apt-get install audio-recorder."
For other Linux distributions, you can use the unofficial beta version via a Snap Package ("sudo snap install audio-recorder --beta").
Last but not least, you can download the source code from the LaunchPad repository and build it yourself following the provided instructions.
Upon first launching Audio Recorder, you are greeted by the app's simplistic GUI. Despite this, the app is much more capable than you might expect.
Take, the advanced timer feature, for example. The app can be set up to start, stop or pause recordings at any given time, or after a set time period. You can also set the limit of the recorded file size (when the recording exceeds a specific limit).
The app can be tweaked to start recording on either voice or sound (you can set the audio threshold), as well as stop or pause the recording on "silence."
Another great thing about Audio Recorder is the fact that it allows you to save the recordings to various formats such as OGG, M4A, FLAC MP3, SPX, and WAV.
Working with Audio Recorder is usually just a matter of launching the app, selecting the source, and the format, and clicking the "Start Recording" button.
It's a wonderfully simple app, that works really well, and offers a lot more advanced features than you might expect at first.
