linux-X For Linux

linux-X is a freely distributable Linux-based operating system that provides users with a traditional desktop environment based on MATE, a fork of GNOME 2. It supports the German language by default.

It is derived from the well known Linux Mint distribution and distributed as a single Live DVD ISO image, which can be used on either 64-bit or 32-bit hardware platforms. We always recommend users to try a Live CD before installing it. When booting linux-X for the first time, use the first option on the boot menu to test the live environment.

A standard boot menu is provided when starting the live medium, allowing users to boot the operating system from the first disk, test the system memory for errors, boot the live environment in safe graphics mode, and install linux-X directly (not recommended). As mentioned before, the German language is used by default in this Linux distribution, but users can easily add support for additional languages during the actual installation.

The main menu of the MATE session is very similar to the one used in the Cinnamon desktop environment. The desktop is comprised of two panels, one on the upper part of the screen and another one at the bottom, just like in the classic interface of the GNOME desktop environment.

Default applications include the usual Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, Pidgin instant messenger, Transmission BitTorrent client, and the LibreOffice office suite.

linux-X also comes with well known applications like Skype, Google Earth, FileZilla, Fotowall, Pinta, PhotoPrint, FrostWire, TeamViewer, Banshee, DeVeDe, GNOME MPlayer, OpenShot, RecordMyDesktop, VLC Media Player, and XBMC Media Center.

It includes numerous multimedia codecs, a custom archiving software, the Linux Mint backup solution, Linux Mint software manager, and Samba for connecting to Windows shares. It is a very good distribution for low-end computers, and German speaking users.
