VozBox is an open source distribution of Linux based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system and designed from the ground up as an advanced communication system powered by open source technologies like Asterisk and FreePBX GUI.
The distribution is available for download as a standard ISO image of approximately 800MB in size, which must be deployed to either a DVD disc or USB stick in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC. From the custom boot prompt, the user can start the installation for 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware platforms.
The “Advanced options” entry of the boot menu will allow you to run the VozBox automated install mode or use alternate desktop environments, such as KDE, LXDE or Xfce. There’s also a Help entry that will display a help screen with further information and instructions.
Being a server oriented operating system, VozBox can only be installed on a local drive. The text-mode installer will require users to select a language and location, choose a keyboard layout, configure the network and install the required software components. After installation, you can easily manager the PBX server by connecting to its web-based interface with any modern web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera or Internet Explorer.
In conclusion, VozBox is an Asterisk VoIP PBX that offers high performance for small offices and other institutions that require such a system. Key features include intelligent routing, support for analog lines, ISDN digital lines, PRI digital lines, interoperability with traditional VoIP and phone systems, and much more.
At the moment, the operating system has been tested with the Asterisk, Libpri, FreePBX, Avantfax, FOP2, Webmin, PHPSysInfo, Fail2ban and CSF Firewall open source software components.
