Ubuntu Unity 23.10 is a very small interim release and is mainly focused on migrating the OS away from Nux and UnityX (which is the biggest hurdle for future Wayland implementation). #Ubuntu Flavor #Unity Desktop #Linux OS #Ubuntu #Unity #Linux
The word Unity still sparks a bit of nostagia in the hearts of many who used to be fans of the desktop environment until the inevitable happened way back in 2017.
Then the Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu came along and, well, what do you know it - the world got to experience what a Unity desktop looks like on a modern Ubuntu base. 22.10 marked the start of what has since become a very interesting official release (and yes, the "Remix" from its name was dropped for this exact reason). Ubuntu Unity 23.10, code-named Mantic Minotaur, is the third Ubuntu Unity release since it received the "official" badge of honor. Since it's based on Ubuntu 23.10, it will only receive support for nine months (until July 2024).
At first glance, there's not much that seems to be changed about Ubuntu Unity (at least when compared with the previous version - 23.04).
Ubuntu Unity 23.10 uses the same Unity 7.7 desktop (with a few maintenance tweaks). The main goal of the team behind Ubuntu Unity was to migrate away from Nux in UnityX. Of course, Rome wasn't built in a day, so it's going to take some time until we'll see Ubuntu Unity without Nux (which is the main reason why Wayland support is not yet fully supported, not without Xwayland).
Missed opportunities
Considering the size of the team behind Ubuntu Unity, it's no surprise that things are moving along at a somewhat slow pace. For instance, support for CUPS 2.0 in Unity has been pushed to Ubuntu 24.04.
Other than that, Ubuntu Unity will soon have a Lomiri variant. The development work on this mobile OS version Ubuntu Unity seems to be in a good spot, but once more, it didn't make it on this release because of "some app launcher-related bugs."
Even though Ubuntu Unity 23.10 might seem quite underwhelming at first glance, it's important to note that there are a ton of important changes in the base Ubuntu. Couple those changes with all the small and incremental changes in Ubuntu Unity 23.10, and it should be quite clear that Ubuntu Unity 24.04 LTS will probably be as good as we want it to be.
