Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu is shaping up to be one of the most successful interim releases, which also means good news for some of the other Ubuntu official flavors, including Ubuntu Studio. Ubuntu Studio 22.10 features a lot of changes, some specifically made for the OS in question, and others "borrowed" from Kubuntu, the Ubuntu flavor that Studio is based upon.
Before we dive deeper into the unique changes of Ubuntu Studio 22.10, let's talk about some of the changes of Kubuntu 22.10.
The biggest change is the transition to Plasma 5.25. While the changes might not seem like much at first glance, they're quite substantial.
Plasma 5.25 brings a series of improvements when it comes to general customization, a lot more GUI colors to choose from, and enhanced support for touchpads and touchscreens with a series of new supported gestures.
Other changes include various upgrades and updates to KDE apps including KDE Gear (22.08), and the fact that Ubuntu Studio now ships with Qt 5.15.6.
In the Audio department, we see changes to various apps and software including Studio Controls (now updated to version 2.3.7 and benefits from tons of bug fixes), RaySession updated to 0.12.2, Carla upgraded to 2.5.1, jack-mixer to 17, lsp-plugins to 1.2.3, and Audacity upgraded to 3.2.0 (no longer a snap app).
The trinity of graphics apps have also received various improvements and updates. These are Krita (upgraded to 5.1.1), Darktable (updated to 4.0.0), and Digikan (updated to 8.0.0, but as a development snapshot).
The list continues with OBS Studio (updated to 28.0.1), Blender (3.2.2), KDEnlive (22.08.1), Freeshow (0.5.6), OpenLP (2.9.5), and Q Light Controller Plus (4.12.5).
With this interim release which is set to receive updates only for 9 months (until July 2023), you get acess to the latest features and improvements. The biggest improvement is by far the switch to Plasma 5.25 which makes the OS feel more modern, smoother, and a lot better equipped to deal with touchpad or touchscreen-based devices.
