Ubuntu 22.10 (Kinetic Kudu) is probably one of the best interim releases from recent years. It's set to receive support for 9 months, until July 2023. The list of changes on the Desktop version are truly amazing and, even though there's nearly as much hype surrounding the Ubuntu Server version, it also features a lot of welcome changes.
One of the first changes is that Ubuntu 22.10 Live Server now includes Subiquity 22.10.1. The list of changes is pretty substantial, but what's to be noted here is that it adds a variety of bug fixes, as well as some nice features. The features include enhancements done to autoinstall, keyboard handling, and cloud-init integration.
OpenSSH uses systemd socket activation by default in Ubuntu Server 22.10.
Another change in Ubuntu Server 22.10 is that all SSSD client libraries don't serialize requests anymore by default. Now, requests from multiple threads can be executed in parallel. There's also a new krb5 plugin idp and a new binary oidc_child that does the OAuth2 authentication against FreeIPA.
Improvements have been made to the LDAP Channel Binding and Signing for Windows integration, Bind9 receives support for remote TLS certificate verification, and Rsync now has a new form of argument protection.
The resource agents have not been forgotten. Canonical announced improvements in many agents of Ubuntu Server 22.10 including IPaddr2, IPv6, LVM-activate, and Fence agents.
Ubuntu Server 22.10 ships with OpenVPN 2.6.0 snapshot. This is because the 2.6.0 version was not released upon the release. The improvements are pretty substantial and include better OpenSSL 3 support, the drop of the --cipher option in favor of the new and improved --data-ciphers.
Docker.io (20.10.16) also received a series of fixes and improvements in order to avoid potential lock issues. Qemu was updated to version 7.0.0, libvirt to version 8.6.0, and openswitch to version 3.0.0.
Last but not least, Ubuntu Server 22.10 also includes the latest version of OpenStack (Zed). It includes the following components: OpenStack Identity - Keystone, OpenStack Imaging - Glance, OpenStack Block Storage - Cinder, OpenStack Compute - Nova, OpenStack Networking - Neutron, OpenStack Telemetry - Ceilometer, Aodh, Gnocchi, OpenStack Orchestration - Heat, OpenStack Dashboard - Horizon, OpenStack Object Storage - Swift, OpenStack DNS - Designate, OpenStack Bare-metal - Ironic, OpenStack Filesystem - Manila, OpenStack Key Manager - Barbican, OpenStack Load Balancer - Octavia and OpenStack Instance HA - Masakari.
