A portable edition of the Debian-based SparkyLinux distro featuring Joe's Window Manager. #Operating system #Linux distribution #Portable OS #SparkyLinux #Bonsai #Linux
SparkyLinux Bonsai is a free and open-source GNU/Linux distribution, a community edition of the Debian-based SparkyLinux operating system that features JWM (Joe's Window Manager) as default graphical desktop environment and comes as a portable OS that you can run entirely from a USB flash drive.
The SparkyLinux Bonsai ISO image offers a wide range of boot options, including the ability to boot SparkyLinux Bonsai in Porteus mode by saving the changes made during the live run in the /live/changes folder or in the /live/changes.dat file.
Users can boot the SparkyLinux Bonsai system without making any changes for privacy, boot SparkyLinux Bonsai in DebianDog mode in RAM with persistence support to save any changes or without saving anything.
Last but not least, users can boot SparkyLinux Bonsai in Porteus mode by first copying all data to RAM for a huge speed increase, which requires a computer with at least 1GB of RAM. Finally, you can also boot an existing OS from the first disk drive.
SparkyLinux Bonsai's default graphical desktop interface is powered by JWM (Joe's Window Manager), a lightweight stacking window manager for X11. JWM's menu construction is based on xdgmenumaker, a command-line tool that generates XDG menus for various window managers.
Default apps include PCmanFM file/desktop manager, Pale Moon web browser, Mousepad text editor, and LXterminal terminal emulator. SparkyLinux Bonsai also includes all DebianDog's module and remaster scripts, and uses the systemd init system.
Portable systems are pretty rare these days, but they're very useful as you don't have to depend on a separate drive or a personal computer to keep your files and changes in a single place, on your pocket.
We recommend SparkyLinux Bonsai to those who want a lightweight, fast and portable operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux. However, at the moment SparkyLinux Bonsai only supports 64-bit computers and EXT2/3/4, FAT32, XFS, and exFAT filesystems.
