Emu-OS is a free and open source GNU/Linux operating system derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, and designed from the offset to help users transform their regular PCs into a veritable and versatile gaming console. It is built around the Emulation Station software and allows you to play old-school games without having to install anything on your computer.
The Emu-OS operating system is distributed for free on Softpedia, as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that contains software packages optimized for both x86 and x86_64 instruction set architectures. Of course, this means that the ISO image is bootable on 32-bit and 64-bit computers, and must be written by the user on a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.
The Live DVD ISO image offers standard boot options, such as the ability to start the live system with normal configuration of in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, perform a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the local drive. Automatic boot is enabled by default with a 10-second timeout, highlighting the first boot option.
Being designed from the ground up as a free solution for temporary (live mode) or permanently transforming your personal computer into a gaming console to play old-school games, the distribution comes packed with a great collection of emulators, supporting a wide range of systems, including NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), Nintendo 64 and SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). When using Emu-OS, you should know that the default username is “emuos” and the default password is “emuos” (without quotes). A controller is required to use the system!
