xfce4-notifyd For Linux

xfce4-notifyd (previously known as notification-daemon-xfce) is a completely free and open source command-line software, a daemon that runs in the background and displays visual notifications on top of the Xfce graphical desktop environment.

It stands for the Xfce Notify Daemon, and it is engineered to implement a server-side portion of the Freedesktop desktop notifications specification, but for Xfce. It’s a port of the notification-daemon project of the well known GNOME desktop environment.

The daemon uses D-Bus and libnotify to pop up a notification bubble in one of the corners of your desktop environment, a function that can be adjust by by the user from the main Control Panel of the desktop.

Notification can be displayed for applications that are capable of sending standard messages over D-Bus using the org.freedesktop.Notifications interface, as well as for internal system events, such as errors, crashes of daemons, active network connections, etc.

The GTK+ 2.6.0 or higher, libxfce4util 4.3.90 or later, libxfcegui4 4.3.90 or later, D-Bus 0.36 or higher, as well as libsexy 0.1.3 or later are required for installing the xfce4-notifyd program on a GNU/Linux operating system.

Download the latest version of the software from Softpedia or via its official website (see the homepage link at the end of the article), save the archive on your Home directory, extract its contents using an archive manager utility, and open a terminal emulator software.

In the Terminal app, run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the program, followed by the ‘sudo make install’ command to install it. After installation, send a test notification by running the ‘notify-send “Test notification’ command in the terminal emulator window.
