Design icons for GNOME with the help of this free, open-source, and useful application. #Icon Preview #Export Icon #GNOME Icon #GNOME #Icon #Preview
GNOME is one of the most popular desktop interfaces (desktop environments) for Linux. It's also one of the oldest projects of this type out there and has seen huge improvements over the past years and with each new iteration.
GNOME 3.32 has seen various performance and GUI improvements, as well as Wayland improvements. GNOME 3.32 also marks the beginning of the icon overhaul for all its apps which include new looks and new design guidelines, usually geared towards simplicity.
In short, 3.32 was a massive step forwards in terms of design and making app icons look better, simpler, and with a somewhat "flatter" design. The new GNOME app icon guidelines include a new size grid, various recommended base shapes, and a new color palette.
GNOME also received a new, very interesting app called App Icon Preview. It's a free and open-source app aimed at GNOME developers and aims to help them design and create GNOME icons.
It provides a basic environment for starting with the icon design workflow, allows them to preview icons in different contexts (such as various grids, various GUI themes, dark and light), as well as export them as SVG.
The new guidelines ensure that shadows are automatically applied to all icons, and App Icon Preview comes in handy when it comes to reviewing these changes.
The app itself is fairly easy to use and doesn't provide a whole lot in terms of features, so don't expect it to offer the same level of tools as other, more specialized icon creation utilities.
The two main GUI elements are the preview area (which takes up most of the main window's space), and the top toolbar. From the toolbar, you can load projects, shuffle the example icons, as well as export projects in three forms (Regular, Nightly, and Symbolic).
It may not seem like much for the average user and, granted, if you're not a GNOME developer you won't care for it that much. However, if you are a GNOME developer, this little app provides a very solid understanding of how GNOME icons should look and feel.
