If you're into changing and tweaking the way GNOME feels and behaves, or just a fan of Linux eye-candy in general, then you probably heard about Coverflow Alt-Tab.
As its name suggests, it replaces the Alt-Tab menu with a more sleek design that allows you to toggle through windows (active apps) in a cover-flow manner.
Contrary to what might seem obvious, Coverflow Alt-Tab is not a new GNOME Shell extension. In fact, the extension has been around for well over a decade in various forms.
Originally, it was a port of the CoverflowAltTab extension by a developer called Palatis. Over the years, the extension featured various rewrites, and tons of improvements and is now dubbed Cloverflow Alt-Tab.
The latest iteration of Coverflow Alt-Tab boasts a plethora of improvements both for its GUI and under the hood. It has a redesigned Preferences panel that brings the whole app in line with the latest design philosophy of GNOME apps (using libadwaita).
There are new customization options that allow you to change various aspects regarding the switcher, the animations, and various options to highlight the window under the mouse cursor.
The app also boasts multi-monitor support, and it even bundles task switching per monitor. Other customization options include the ability to change the overlay icon size and opacity, as well as enable shadows for various elements.
It's almost inspiring how a GNOME extension such as Coverflow Alt-Tab stood the test of time. Sure, it went through a series of redesigns, but the community behind the extension seems to be a really good one.
Coverflow Alt-Tab still manages to offer an appealing replacement/redesign for the basic GNOME Alt-Tab menu, as well as a series of nice-to-have customization options.
What's new in Coverflow Alt-Tab 72:
- CHANGED:
- Support for GNOME 46.
- GNOME Version Support
- Since I use Arch linux and its GNOME versions lag behind other distributions', I will simultaneously maintain, at least until Arch gets 46, two branches of the code, one for 45 and one for 46. I will develop 46 in the master branch and back-port changes to a branch created from tag v71, gnome-45. This will only affect people who install from source as I will upload the 45 and 46 versions as appropriate to the GNOME extensions website.
