Share files on your local network with the help of this stylish and modern, little app. #Share File #File Sharing #Share Local File #Share #File #Sharing
Even though sharing files between two Linux computers may not be as straightforward as on Windows, there are still a lot of valid solutions such as cloud storage platforms, the good ol' FTP, and many many others.
Another great solution is Share My Host. It's a free, open-source, modern little application for Linux that uses a stripped-down HTTP server for sharing files within your network.
We already mentioned that Share My Host uses an HTTP server to do its job. To be more precise, it uses something called mount points. These so-called mount points are a type of HTTP endpoints with directory listing to specific directories on your file system.
The best part is you can have as many mount points as you want, and it doesn't even require special permissions on Linux.
For example, you can have one mount point for your miscellaneous files (/Miscellaneous/home/user/Miscellaneous), one for your movies, one for your music, and so forth.
You can then access the directory listing and all the included files via a basic browser at http://ip:port/Miscellaneous.
Right off the bat, there's very little chance you'll find this app confusing, as it's remarkably straightforward. The main window allows you to start the server, copy its address to your computer's address, or even load it directly within the browser.
The Mount Points section can be accessed from the file menu, and that's pretty much about it.
In terms of features, besides the obvious, Share My Hosts also features support for Kodi HTTP client, and a Mongoose Server is used as the backend.
Last but not least, the GUI is written in C++ and follows all material design guidelines of Google.
Share My Host is a very efficient and cool little project. Even though the app hasn't been updated in the last few years, it should still work great on most Linux environments.
