Securely and easily share files in real-time between computers with the help of this nice tiny app. #Send File #File Transfer #Secure Transfer #Sender #Sharing #File
It's often said that most valuable things in life don't cost any money. While we fully agree with this statement, things are usually not the same when it comes to software. Sometimes paying money does give you a better product, but not in this case.
RiftShare is a clear example of what an awesome free and open-source application should be all about. To quote the app's website "the purpose of this project is to enable everyone to be able to share files privately in real life, without the use of the major tech companies and cloud providers."
The whole philosophy behind RiftShare is making file sharing/file transfer easier and more secure than ever, even for the average user. Safe to say that the app really succeeds as you don't need any accounts, no sign-ups, no sign-ings to transfer files.
One of the most impressive aspects of RiftShare is that it works on all major platforms (Linux, macOS, and Windows). The application uses the magic wormhole protocol to do its job.
Hence, file transfers are fully encrypted and said transfers can be done in the local network or through the Internet. Since it uses the magic wormhole protocol, RiftShare is fully compatible with other apps that use the same protocol (such as magic-wormhole or wormhole-william CLI, or wormhole-gui, etc.)
As one can imagine, this makes the app very useful in a wide range of cases. FOr instance, you can use when you want to transfer files between two or more computers with different OSes. You can also use to send and receive files to and from various friends and family memebers locally, or if you're a system administrator who needs to transfer files without having to deal with SCP and SFTP or similar technologies.
The way you interact with RiftShare is definitely one of its highlights, as its as user-friendly as one can imagine. In short, you simply select a file or a folder, and click the Send button (in the Send tab). A code will be then generated, a code that can be used on the other computer to download the file/files, and that's about it.
There's also a Settings section that allows you to turn the notifications on or off, as well as change the default destination folder, and access the logs.
The fact that this little project is free and open-source is truly amazing to see. Just image that someone (in this case, the app's developer) takes the time to build and maintain something as good as RiftShare - an app that doesn't cost a penny, that allows you to instantly send and receive files to and from various computers securely, and looks quite nice.
