It might come as a bit of a surprise that the IRC (Internet Relay Chat, one of the most basic forms of text-based chat systems) protocol is still being used today.
IRC is designed as a distributed and real-time, group communication tool (which uses discussion forums called channels), but it also allows one-on-one chat via private messages, as well as data transfer (file sharing).
If you want to add a bit of nostalgia in your life, or you're simply interested in trying out IRC for the first time, you'll need an IRC client.
Halloy is one such utility, a free, open-source, and cross-platform (works on Windows, macOS, and Linux) IRC client for the masses. It may not be the most powerful or feature-packed IRC client out there, but it's one of the newer ones, and it's perfectly adequate for most users.
For starters, we've already mentioned that it's free, open-source, and it works on all major platforms out there. It's written in Rust and made with the Iced GUI library, a cool cross-platform GUI library for Rust. This all means that it's blazing fast, it doesn't use much in terms of resources, and it looks modern.
Another thing that makes Halloy a good starting IRC client is that it's focused on simplicity. There are no hidden menus, or customization feautres, for that matter. What Halloy does have is a very fancy and functional window snapping management system.
It's very similar to what you can find in most OSes, and it basically allows you to work with up to four channels at once by dragging and dropping them into the position that best suits your needs.
Halloy is a great little IRC client for all major desktop platforms out there. It may not be the most feature-packed app of its kind, but that's exactly what makes it perfectly suited for beginner or day-to-day users who just want a simple, functional, and friendly IRC client.
