On November 8, 2016, Michael Tremer from the IPFire project, an open source initiative trying to produce a hardened, professional, secure, and easy-to-use Linux-based firewall operating system, announced the release of IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107.

IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107 is the latest, most stable and advanced version of the IPFire 2.19 series, and it looks like it finally patches that nasty "Dirty COW" Linux kernel vulnerability that was fixed by Linus Torvalds himself a while ago in all supported Linux kernel branches.

"This update patches the IPFire Linux kernel against a recently disclosed vulnerability called Dirty COW. This is a local privilege escalation bug which could be used by a local attacker to gain root privileges," said Michael Tremer in the release announcement for the IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107 update.

IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107 is a small update, coming only one week after the major IPFire 2.19 Core Update 106 release. Among other interesting improvements, it adds a patch that attempts to improve support for Intel processors with AES-NI to provide better encryption with 256 and 192 bit key lengths.

Also, the new Unbound DNS proxy is displayed in the WebUI's log section, and hdparm 9.5.0 and libjpeg 1.5.1 have been included in IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107, which is recommended for all users using a previous release from the IPFire 2.19 series. Newcomers can download IPFire 2.19 Core Update 107 right now from our website.
