CD Projeckt Red, the company that runs GOG.com, has announced that it intends to release a stable client called GOG Galaxy, similar with Steam. Fans of this digital distribution platform are now asking the developers to provide the software as open source.

One of the main features provided by GOG.com is the lack of any DRM (digital rights management) in their games. Now, users are saying that, if the company intends to release a new platform, it should also make it open source. This way, the community will be able to help with the development.

“If you plan to create an incremental updates service in the future, please release your client as open source in order to enable collaboration with the community and to build trust with your users. It would set GOG apart from other services which use closed clients, and would be in the same spirit as being DRM free in general,” reads the petition on the community wishlist.

Almost 500 users have signed the petition, which is a lot for something posted in that particular category of the website. The problem is that GOG Galaxy promises integration with Steam for multiplayer purposes, which would make the community request a little bit difficult, if not impossible.

It remains to be seen if GOG Galaxy will be open source, but you have to keep in mind that Steam is not open source and it's doing pretty well by itself.
