Ubuntu Touch is still a long way from a competitive mobile operating system, but applications such as Mappero might just make its rivals sweat.

Ubuntu Touch still needs a lot of applications, but the community has been very helpful and many developers have already made or ported various important core apps.

“Just out of curiosity, today I tried building my map application (Mappero) on the Nexus 4 running Ubuntu Touch. To my surprise, the build completed fine, and the application can even start.”

“The application is really primitive and doesn't do anything useful now, but I have grand plans for it ;-) I noticed that the GPS didn't activate; I guess that the location service is not yet ready?” stated Alberto Mardegan on the official mailing list.

This is far from a stable version, but if the development of this particular application follows the same path, the final product should be on par with everything that's already available on the platform.
