Wwise is a technology that nobody knew it could work on Linux

Wwise, a middleware solution for audio production used in games and other media, will be ported to the Linux platform, signaling that end of Window's monopoly as a PC gaming platform is aPproaching.

Wwise is a set of tools that are much better known between developers than to the public. Even so, it has been widely used in various games and so far it's only available for the Windows platform.

The announcement that SteamOS will launched by Valve has been taken very seriously by developers, including the ones from Audiokinetic who are responsible for Wwise.

“Wwise will be there with SteamOS. Please contact us if you need linux support now,” said Bernard Rodrigue, Software Developer and User Experience Specialist working from Audiokinetic.

AMD also recently announced the new Mantle API, which should make the development of games for Linux and future consoles a lot simpler, and Nvidia has said that is working very closely with Valve to improve SteamOS.

This is just the beginning, but given the recent problems Windows 8.x faced and the small rate of adoption, not to mention the industry reticence to the new Microsoft products, it's safe to say that a new era is dawning for the Linux platform.
