This is probably just a minor problem that will be fixed soon

Linux users can download the Steam client from the official website, not just from the repositories, but it looks like the download link provided by Valve is not working anymore.

The download links for Steam on the official website don't point to the actual client, they point to an installer that needs to be run before the software is installed. The same is true for Windows and Mac OS X, but the process is not as transparent.

Many Linux distributions include the client by default, while others have the client in the repositories. Ubuntu, for example, allows users to download Steam from the Ubuntu Software Center, but not directly from the repositories.

The Steam installer was updated a short while ago and that might be the problem with the link. Most likely, this is just an oversight that will be fixed soon by Valve, otherwise it looks very bad for the Linux community.

Fortunately, we managed to track down an official download link for the package and you can safely use it until Valve gets its website in order.

You can download the official Steam for Linux installer from Softpedia (check the download URL if you are not sure). Remember, the Steam installer has quite a few dependencies, so please be patient.
