Nvidia has announced that the operating system powering their newly released hand-held console, Shield, is now open source.

Nvidia Shield is a portable games console powered by Android that includes a controller and a screen, and which can even run streamed games from a PC with an Nvidia graphics card.

“But if you’re not content with what SHIELD can do out of the box, we invite you to build out SHIELD’s capabilities in any way you wish.

“To be sure, this is double-diamond stuff. If you’re not a coder or already set up with an Android development environment, you should skip downloading these tools and perhaps just check out what the amazing XDA community can do instead,” reads the Nvidia announcement on the official blog.

This means that users will be able to unlock the bootloader and root the console. Be careful though, you will be voiding the warranty of the device.

With all this in mind, it’s going to be very interesting to see what the community will come up with.
