Git, a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency, is now at version 1.8.5 RC2.

Git 1.8.5 RC2 continues the trend of large releases, just like the stable branch, and the developers are pushing a lot of updates with each new version.

Highlights of Git 1.8.5 RC2:

• The remote-hg remote helper is now working properly when interacting with a local Hg repository relative to the home directory; • Subversion 1.8.0 no longer breaks older subversion clients coming over http/https in various ways; • xdg-open can be used as a browser backend for "git web-browse" (hence to show "git help -w" output), when it's available; • The "http.*" variables can now be specified per URL.

For a complete list of changes, check the official announcement. Download Git 1.8.5 RC2 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
