So far, only the Windows version has been removed, but there is no sign of GIMP 2.8.8

The developers of GIMP have decided to remove the Windows version of their software from SourceForge because the latter would bundle their package with other free applications.

This is the not the first time something like this happens, but SourceForge was believed to be a safe haven for the FLOSS applications.

“SourceForge, once a useful and trustworthy place to develop and host FLOSS applications, has faced a problem with the ads they allow on their sites – the green ‘Download here’ buttons that appear on many, many adds leading to all kinds of unwanted utilities have been spotted there as well,” reads the announcement on the GIMP website.

If misleading ads were not enough, the developers have found out that GIMP was being bundled, within a SourceForge Installer software, with other packages that had nothing to do with GIMP.

“The tipping point was the introduction of their own SourceForge Installer software, which bundles third-party offers with Free Software packages. We do not want to support this kind of behavior, and have thus decided to abandon SourceForge,” also reads the announcement.

This being said, it seems that only the Windows version had trouble on SourceForge, but the last release of GIMP has also failed to show up, even as source.
