SteamOS is the Linux distribution developed by Valve

Valve is betting a lot on SteamOS and Steam Machine, but famous game industry analyst Michael Pachter says that going with Linux for SteamOS is a mistake.

To be clear, SteamOS is currently undergoing a lot of testing and it will be a while until a definitive version is made available, one that would be easily installable for regular users.

“I think SteamOS is the problem. Making it Linux-based will keep a lot of content off the device until there is a large install base. Until there are 5 million of them, very few developers will spend their money to port the game and there won't be five million if there is no content,” said the analyst.

Michael Pachter has been wrong before, but this actually sounds correct. He doesn't take into account the expansion of the Linux platform in the last year, and it's going to be impossible to predict the future of SteamOS.
