John Carmack, one of the founders of id Software, has just announced that the Doom 3 source code will be available shortly.

In a tweet today, John Carmack said "Doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release".

This means that the work is pretty much done and they just have dot the i's and cross the t's for everything to be legal.

The announcement hasn't entirely came by surprise, as Carmack said earlier this year that the Doom 3 source code will be made publicly available, in a keynote during the QuakeCon conference.

It's not uncommon for id Software to release the source code for its games. They already done so with Return to Castle Wolfenstein and other titles from this series.
