Canonical is working hard on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), and it is considering all kinds of changes, including the removal of memtest86+ from Ubuntu Server (cloud images).

This is not the first time when the inclusion of memtest86+ is discussed, but the package has managed to remain included by default for quite some time.

“Looking at the contents of the cloud images, memtest86+ is one of the packages that I questioned the necessity of in a cloud image. memtest86+ was added to standard on 2006-06-20. Do we still feel that it is necessary as part of the default install?”

“If people do still feel it is useful as part of the default install, is there a reasonable way we can explicitly exlude it from cloud images without removing ‘ubuntu-standard?’” said Scott Moser, Ubuntu server technical lead at Canonical.

In case you didn't know, memtest86+ is a tool that is used to look for faulty memory hardware by performing a series of deep tests.
