Axiom Verge, a 2D side-scrolling adventure game developed by Thomas Happ Games LLC has been released on Steam, and it also comes with a Linux version.

There are many 2D action games on Steam for Linux, and you might be tempted to think that this is just one of them. In fact, it's a game that closely resembles titles such as Contra and Metroid, which sets a very high-quality bar for itself. It was initially released for Playstation 4, but now the studio decided to bring it to PCs and Mac OS as well.

"Axiom Verge is an action-platform-exploration game in the tradition of classics like Metroid, Contra, and Blaster Master. In addition to new PC features like Steam Cloud saves, Leaderboards, and Trading Cards, it boasts over 900 screens in a massive alien world, monstrous enemies, bosses, and power-ups," reads the Steam synopsis.

As you can already see from the screenshots, this is not exactly a demanding game and the system requirements are rather low, so users will just need to have at least Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (other distros might work as well) an Intel Pentium E2180 2.0 GHz processor, 500 MB of RAM, an Intel HD Graphics 4400 processor, and 300 MB of available space.)
