Ubuntu For Linux

Ubuntu 10.10 is an open source and freely distributed Linux operating system built around the GNOME desktop environment and based on the well known Debian GNU/Linux distribution. This release comes with a totally revamped graphical installer and Ubuntu Software Center app.

Dubbed Maverick Meerkat, this edition of Ubuntu has been officially released on October 10, 2010, and discontinued in April 10, 2012. Key features include Linux kernel 2.6.35, GNOME 2.32.0 desktop environment, X.Org 7.5, Xorg Server 1.9.0, Compiz Fusion 0.8.6, and Nouveau video driver.

Even if it’s no longer supported by Canonical with security updates and bugfixes, the system is still available for download and distributed as Alternate and Desktop Live CD ISO images, supporting both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms.

The ISO images provide users with the same boot prompt found on the previous release, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), designed to allow users to run a memory diagnostic test, boot the currently installed operating system, as well as to install the OS directly, without testing it (not recommended).

As mentioned, the desktop environment is still powered by the controversial GNOME desktop environment, comprised of two panels. While the top panel is used for accessing the main menu, launch applications, and interact with the system tray area, the bottom panel helps users to interact with running apps and switch between the four virtual desktops.

Default applications include the Evolution email client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, Gwibber social networking client, Transmission torrent downloader, OpenOffice.org office suite, Totem movie player, Rhythmbox music player, and Shotwell image viewer and organizer.

In conclusion, Maverick Meerkat was yet another great release of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It was the first to introduce support for commercial applications and gestures with multi-touch.
